About

Avis Rumney Biography

My experience with anorexia nervosa and subsequent recovery inspired me to help others suffering from eating disorders. Some of my own story I share in my book, Dying to Please: Anorexia Nervosa and Its Cure. The second edition of the book will be released in 2007.

As a California Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Eating Disorders Specialist since 1982, I have worked extensively with people with eating disorders and their families. In this work, I discovered that mothers and their needs were being overlooked. I found that mothers, when given solid information, specific tools and substantial support, were an asset to their daughter's recovery.

In 1995, I began coaching mothers of eating disordered daughters. While these women share many issues in common, each mother is unique, each daughter is special and each situation is different. I strive to respect and respond to each mother's individual needs and concerns that have developed within the context of her particular circumstances.

Mothers who have worked with me say they have found that the information and help they received made a significant difference in their own lives, as well as in their daughter's recovery. See What Mothers are Saying for specific comments about clients' experiences in working with me.
